Day 2

Pienza and Pecorino Cheeses: The Taste of Tuscan Tradition

Pienza, a small medieval town with Renaissance architecture, is situated just a couple of kilometers from Montalcino, proudly perched on the hills of the Val d'Orcia. Pienza is renowned for its pecorino cheeses, a culinary tradition originating from the pastoral practices in the region.

Pecorino cheese is produced from sheep's milk and is still made in small farms using traditional methods passed down through the generations. A wide range of pecorino cheeses is available in Pienza, each with distinct flavors, textures, and aging processes.

Tourists in Pienza have the opportunity to visit the picturesque cheese stores in the city, offering a variety of dairy products for both sampling and purchase. Pienza’s Pecorino is appreciated for its smooth texture, strong scents, and a hint of spiciness that pairs well with Tuscan wine. You can also participate in live demonstrations showcasing cheese production techniques and discover the link between pecorino cheese and the local farming culture.

Furthermore, Pienza offers the opportunity to combine pecorino cheese with other traditional Tuscan products like salami, honey, and artisanal bread. Having a picnic in the nearby countryside with a basket filled with local delicacies is a genuine opportunity to savor the finest tastes of the region.
